Haslam vows to bounce back after race two Donington crash

JG Speedfit Kawasaki’s Leon Haslam experience his first race crash of the season at his home round at Donington Park, during the second MCE British Superbike race. The DNF now means that title rival, Be Wiser Ducati’s Shane Byrne leads the series by 27 points.

In both races, Byrne and Haslam were both dicing for the win, and the Kawasaki rider lost out to Byrne in race one to finish in second, and fell unhurt in the final outing, which allowed Byrne to do the double.

After the crash Haslam stated that he was pushing a bit too hard and struggled a bit with the rear tyre, but vows to make amends at the next round at Assen.

“I was pushing a bit too hard and I was struggling a bit with the rear tyre and I tucked the front and it is disappointing. But we will bounce back at Assen,” said Haslam at the track. 

In both races, Haslam opted for the SC2 front and SC1 rear tyres, but in the first race the temperatures continued to soar, meaning he lacked grip towards the end of the race. Byrne went for the softer rear option and paced on to take the win by seven seconds. But Haslam thought his tyre would come good in the end.

Speaking after his race one podium Haslam added: “We did a lot of work with the harder tyre and we knew the soft one had more grip and on race distance we knew that our bike uses the tyre a bit more and we said if it gets above 30 degrees we would try and zero and literally last minute we said we would go with what we know.

“The temperature getting up it made my tyre a bit greasy and it was my decision as well. The decision on the tyre it was like a toss of a coin and half my team said one way and the other half said the other and it was 50/50 and it was my decision at the end and I expected my tyre to come better in the end.”
