Althea Racing team - Monza Superbike races
01/01/1970
The fourth round of the World Superbike Championship took place today at the historic Monza circuit, with dry and sunny conditions for both of the day’s races. In the morning warm-up Althea Racing’s technicians defined the last details concerning the setting of Davide Giugliano’s RSV4 bike. Thanks to hismbrilliant performance in yesterday’s Superpole, he started today’s race from the second row with the sixth time.
In the first race Davide started in an excellent position just behind the leading group before unfortunately experiencing some brake issues which limited his performance. During the ninth lap Giugliano, in the proximity of the first chicane, lost contact with the group who were racing for first position. Davide reentered the track, but could not do better than tenth place. In race two, Giugliano started well and spent the first laps in third place. However Davide then risked falling at the Roggia chicane - he managed to stay on his feet but lost ground against the leading riders. The Althea team rider chased them, but could not close the gap that separated him from the first four. After struggling with Davies and Fabrizio, Giugliano ended the race in sixth place. A position that places him in ninth place in the championship standings with 49 points.
Genesio Bevilacqua: "In race one, a technical problem with the brake system did not allow us to obtain the desired result while in the second Davide showed his great potential and that of his bike. We made another progressive step forward and we accumulated experience which will be useful in the next races. I am pleased with how the rider and the team worked here in Monza and I want to thank all our fans who came to support us and in particular Antonio Annoscia of Unibat who wanted to be close to our team here in Monza."
Davide Giugliano: "This is a race to forget. We had so many problems with the brakes and the rear tyre did not work as expected either. In race two I started well and had good pace. I wanted to stay with the leading group but I made a small mistake through the Roggia chicane and almost crashed, possibly due to an oil spill as there was oil on the rear tyre. I tried to catch the leading group but they were already too far ahead. This is a strange track and different from the others, I prefer to close the chapter of this story and start thinking about the next races at Donington."
