Josh Brookes - I was hoping for more earlier
01/01/1970
Milwaukee Yamaha’s Josh Brookes proved today that he’s a real MCE British Superbike championship contender after coming so close to doing the double at Oulton Park.
But the Australian rider is not surprised by just how quickly he’s adapted to his new team and bike. He wanted to bag his first win at the opening round at Brands Hatch, and not in race two this afternoon. But Brookes is content that he’s got the first victory with his new crew under his belt – but wished it happened sooner.
In race one Brookes was unable to edge Rapid Solicitors Kawasaki’s Shane Byrne to take the victory, and had to settle for a respectable second place finish. But after bagging a new lap record Brookes was in a confident mood – and blasted off the starting line in the final race of the day at the Cheshire track.
Brookes led from the start and was able to get the better of Byrne to snatch a narrow but deserved victory in race two. The Northern Ireland based rider sees the triple champion as one of his biggest threats to the title, and will try to always pressure him on track - and to never give up on that number one spot on the podium.
"Shakey has been at the front of BSB for such a long time, he's not someone who's going to be pressured or intimidated by me. If rider's don’t have that ambition to get the front then they are not going to succeed,” said Brookes, speaking to bikesportnews.com at the track this evening.
“He knows that's my character to always push my way to the front and to be relentless. I think the greatest affect is if I pressure him and make him make a mistake if he’s not leading, and out class him on the track, then that will shake him - not the character of the rider.
"I was hoping for more earlier, but I made mistakes at Brands so its not surprising to get the win here, it should have come earlier. There is more to come and now I’m looking to the North West and the TT. I am hard on myself as I don’t find satisfaction in many results unless I come first.
“I have a desire to win and if I don’t get that then it's not mission accomplished. Also I think that’s the Australian mentality too, as we are people who don’t give up and we want to achieve.
“Some people watching might think I’m being too hard on myself, but I think ultimately for me to achieve my goals I need to keep pushing, so im not publicly going to be overwhelmed with happiness with a second place, as I just want to win." -
